Single Strap Backpack

If you need a day pack this could be the perfect style bag for you. It's bigger than a fanny pack, and smaller than a regular adult backpack. Most backpacks have two straps, one for each shoulder. This single strap style has just one strap so it only fits over one shoulder at a time. The bag compartment is wider at the base like a standard backpack and narrow at the top from which the single shoulder strap emerges. This gives the bag a triangle or teardrop appearance. That also reduces the amount of internal storage space and makes it about half way between the fanny pack and full size backpack.

This style makes a great daypack for carrying your lunch, some light camera gear for sightseeing, or a few snacks/drinks if going on a small hiking day trip. The one strap design is considered more comfortable and ergonomic because it allows the bag to rest more evenly along your back as you walk. You aren't faced with the added bulk of a second strap. Many people wear a two strap bag with just one strap over their shoulder anyway, so this design just eliminates the extra strap.

This style of bag is popular in cities and worn by people who ride bikes to work or to get around for errands. It's not big enough to be a school bag, but just perfect to hold your day's provisions while on a jaunt through the city or hiking in the woods.

There are a few dozen different styles to choose from, made by a variety of companies.

It's considered one of the greatest travel bags because it fits quite comfortably on an airplane as a carry-on, is bigger than a purse and easily holds everything you need for sightseeing all in one bag. Most of them have extra side pockets to make it easier to find small items like an ipod or wallet and their design tends to make it much more comfortable for your back and provide less back strain and pain after a long day of walking.

When shopping for a single strap backpack look for the following:

  1. Size. Some bags are bigger than others. There are mini bags as well as regular size bags.
  2. Angle and positioning. Some of the designs work only across one shoulder or the other, some work on either shoulder. If you are right or left side dominant this could matter to you.
  3. Pockets for accessories. Most of the bags have outside smaller pockets, but not all. If this is important to you please read the description and reviews about the pockets and their placement.
  4. Security. Does it close with zippers or velco or both? How hard is it to get into the bag when you need to? Is there a way to secure it from curious people?
  5. Comfort. If you're able to "try one on" before buying that would be helpful. The bags designs are slightly different and will rest on your back and hips differently. Most people say they are far more comfortable than a standard backpack. If you can't try it on, be willing to send it back if its not a good fit. The straps can also be adjusted as needed.

You can purchase online or in a retail store. If you find one you like locally check online for better pricing and free shipping. Most of these bags range from $20-$100, with the average about $50.
